5 Gas Safety Checks Every Gauteng Homeowner Should Do Today

Every time you connect a gas cylinder, you hold the safety of your entire household in your hands. The good news? It only takes a few minutes to run through these five simple checks – and they can stop a small fault from becoming a serious emergency.

1. Inspect the Rubber Hose

Look for cracks, brittleness, or discolouration. In Gauteng’s dry Highveld winters, hoses can harden and split faster than you think. Replace the hose immediately if it shows any sign of wear – Afrik Gas always includes a fresh hose with every new cylinder exchange, so ask your driver for one.

2. Do the Soapy Water Test

Mix a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid with water and dab it onto the valve, regulator, and hose connections. Open the gas slowly. If you see bubbles forming, there’s a leak. Close the cylinder valve, tighten the connections, and test again. If bubbles persist, call us – we’ll send a technician at no cost.

3. Check the Expiry Date

Every LPG cylinder has a test date stamped on its collar. Cylinders older than 10 years must be re‑qualified or replaced. Afrik Gas only circulates cylinders that have passed our SABS re‑validation, so you never have to worry – but it’s good to know what to look for.

4. Secure the Cylinder

Always stand the cylinder upright, even when transporting it in your boot. Never wedge it next to a hot engine or leave it in direct sunlight. A cylinder that tips over can leak liquid gas, which is far more dangerous than vapour.

5. Keep the Area Clear

Your cylinder should have at least 1.5 metres of breathing space – no cardboard boxes, paint tins, or electrical cables nearby. In a small kitchen, that can be tough, so we recommend wall‑mounting the cylinder outside with a simple cage. Contact us for an affordable installation quote.

When you order from Afrik Gas, every cylinder arrives with a safety seal and a QR code linking to these checks. Peace of mind is included in the delivery fee.
